Admissions and Advising - Engineering & Design

Declaring a major in one of the four programs in the Engineering & Design Department requires several steps. Students are not directly admitted into the dep‚Äčartment. First, students must be accepted by the university.  After students are accepted by the university they may declare as a pre-major in one of the four programs and begin taking the foundational coursework.  Finally, after completing the required foundational coursework students then apply to the major and if accepted, they then can declare that major.

For specific details about each program and required coursework, please see information and links below.  The pre-major advisor is available to answer specific questions and to assist with the declaration process.

In the Electrical Engineering program new majors begin fall quarter only. The same is true for both Energy and Electronic concentrations. Applications are accepted at the end of spring quarter and the beginning of fall quarter only. Admission to full major status is determined by academic performance as a pre-major as well as other factors including an application questionnaire about the applicant's experience, motivation, and goals. Admission to the major is competitive. Neither completion of the prerequisites nor attainment of any specific GPA guarantees admission.  Pre-requisite courses are the same for both Energy and Electronic Concentrations. Twenty four students are typically accepted into the Electronics Concentration and twelve students are typically accepted into the Energy Concentration. A list of frequently asked questions contains information about admissions stats and GPA targets.

Admission to the major is competitive. Neither completion of the foundational courses nor attainment of any specific GPA guarantees admission. Twenty four students are typically accepted into the program each year and they begin major courses spring quarter of year two. The average GPA of admitted students usually varies between 2.9 and 3.1 in the prerequisite courses.  This is an average GPA that we have seen historically based on the applicant pools and is not a cut-off GPA.

The Industrial Design program requires acceptance of an Entrance Portfolio in order to declare as a pre-major in Industrial Design. Students apply to the Industrial Design program after acceptance to the university.  A portfolio is a collection of an applicant's best creative work, revealing the applicant's creative skills and presented as professionally as possible. This initial screening process helps to determine a candidate's potential for success within the program. In order to maintain academic program quality in relation to faculty, staff and facilities, the program limits the number of applicants admitted. The school reserves the right to be the sole judge of who shall be accepted into the program.  On average, the program accepts 24 pre-majors annually.  Historically, 80-110 students apply every year.

Entrance Portfolio examples, tips, due dates, and the application are available on this Admissions page.
