The work:

Kick-start your career in our training program to learn the latest cloud infrastructure skills
Work closely with clients to come up with a cloud strategy that meets their business needs and help them put a new cloud-based infrastructure into place
Launch into action with a detailed plan to move a client's infrastructure into the cloud quickly – using migration assessments, automated tools and cloud application strategy
Answer any client questions as they radically improve the management of data centers, networks and workplace services within a cloud infrastructure

Qualifications

Here’s what you need:

Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree in Engineering, Information Systems, Decision Sciences, Mathematics, Statistics, or Natural Sciences disciplines (with graduation date no later than September, 2020)


Bonus points if you: Major or minor in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Software Engineering disciplines. Have internship or academic experience with programming languages and/or modern web technologies

The Pacific Northwest Seismic Network within the Department of Earth and Space Sciences has an outstanding opportunity for a Senior Computer Specialist. The department is seeking a Senior Computer Specialist to support the real-time seismic monitoring projects. 

PNSN monitors earthquakes in the states of Washington and Oregon for public safety and scientific research.  We operate about 450 remote seismic stations throughout the region, most of which are essentially small Linux computers. Data from these remote sites are transmitted to the UW continuously in real time to our cluster of about 2 dozen Linux servers. The data are processed through several applications to provide a series of products, including real-time warnings of imminent shaking, earthquake locations and sizes, distribution of strong shaking, and raw data archived for scientific and engineering studies.  The Senior Computer Specialist (SCS) position is critical for designing and maintaining our network of computers, ensuring secure, high-availability, and low latency interconnections.

The successful applicant will work within a small team of computer specialists at PNSN and the Department of Earth and Space Sciences at UW. And they will interface with scientists and applications developers who produce and maintain the data processing and production codes.  An exciting challenge for the SCS is to work within a real-time and continuous production framework. The SCS is expected to participate in PNSN’s growing use of cloud services and deployments, virtualization, and automated performance monitoring techniques.

Responsibilities:

Server and Cloud Administration:

•Research, recommend, plan, and install new hardware and systems.
•Maintain hardware, virtual machines, containers, and software inventory.
•Maintain technical documentation of all systems for problem resolving and problem diagnosing procedures.
•Assess user needs/requirements: Research, recommend and/or request products, hardware, services, and software applications.
•Participate in testing and evaluating hardware and cloud products in planning for new applications.
•Plan, develop, test and schedule (on-premise, cloud, or virtual) server and desktop client software patches.

•Establish and maintain network trusts to UW IT and other necessary systems.
•Analyze, plan, develop, implement, and maintain a disaster recovery plan
•Schedule and run routine network and systems backups and coordinate/maintain off-site storage of recovery archives.


Application support

•Support, maintain, and monitor applications on premises as well as in the cloud.
•Maintain, support, and enhance several Nagios systems.

Qualifications:

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or closely-related discipline.

Experience:

At least 3 years of IT progressively responsible experience including Linux system administration, shell scripting, computer networking, and application support.

Job Summary
This is an ideal position for those individuals who would like to apply their information technology skills to administer and improve state-of-the-art high-availability LINUX based systems. The successful candidate will be part of a team administering Caltech’s real-time 24/7 earthquake data acquisition and processing hardware and software. Detailed tasking includes LINUX system level support and supervising hardware maintenance; maintenance and troubleshooting of data processing applications in C, C++, Java, Perl, Python, and other software; and maintenance of information distribution applications, including web posting, email, and instant messaging. The applicant will participate in development to implement new hardware and software, IP networking, improve data availability, and operational reliability and efficiency of the Southern California Seismic Network (SCSN) and ShakeAlert. The applicant will also be involved in system design, review for future acquisition architecture, and cloud based computing.  

Job Duties

  • Be part of a team administering the SCSN/CISN and ShakeAlert real-time data acquisition, processing, and analysis application software, and associated computer hardware and system software.
  • Assist in the deployment, testing, and maintenance of new applications written in C++, Perl, Java, Python, or other languages under LINUX, or other operating systems. Write scripts and puppet manifests to automate real-time processing tasks, improve automated failover capabilities, and track system performance.
  • Deploy and operate cloud computing and virtualization software and services, using VMware and AWS cloud.
  • Participate in procurement, installation, and configuration of new hardware or software.
  • Use Request Tracker (issue tracking system) for getting assignments and tracking progress. Maintain user documentation for the SCSN/CISN real-time systems. Prepare written reports, presentations, and assist in preparing proposals. Assist in supervising outside contractors, including writing design specifications for tasks.
  • Must be able to share ‘On-call duties’, which may require occasional evening and weekend response time.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications

  • BS degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or Physical Science is required for this position.
  • 2+ years of experience in system administration, and maintaining application software in UNIX/LINUX environment for science or engineering.
  • The qualified candidate should have an active interest in routine operations to ensure data integrity and availability, as well as innovation, and incorporating new efficiencies into the operation.
  • Demonstrated skills in LINUX administration and advanced shell scripting experience in bash, tcsh, Python, and/or Perl.
  • Must have abilities for troubleshooting, maintaining, and improving existing software or scripts, working with computer hardware, and IP communications.
  • Experience with server monitoring (SNMP, NAGIOS, cacti, and custom scripts).
  • Experience with use of kickstart and puppet for OS installation and configuration management.
  • Proven ability to work in a team of staff with a wide range of expertise is necessary.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills needed.
  • Ability to meet strict deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications

  • MS degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or Physical Science is preferred.
  • 4+ years of experience in system administration, and maintaining application software in UNIX/LINUX environment for science or engineering.
  • Some familiarity with basic Cisco/Network administration, Cisco switches and routers, understanding of NAT/PNAT (both dynamic and static), and multicast and OSPF protocols.
  • Some knowledge of MPLS, Telco T1, VSAT and cellular telemetry.
  • Some experience with applications that interface with Oracle or MySQL.
  • Some experience with software repository like SVN or GIT.
  • Some experience with cloud computing such as AWS.
  • Familiarity with one of the technology areas needed by SCSN/CISN, such as seismology, seismic instrumentation.
