Give Big, Give Blue!
On June 1st, Vikings around the globe will unite for a 24-hour fundraising blitz to support students. Together we will increase access and success at WWU by making a gift to our favorite department, scholarship or program. A percentage of every gift will be matched by the WWU Give Day Challenge Match!
Last year’s 1st ever give day set the record for the most donors (698) in one day to Western, including more than 200 first-time donors. Total giving exceeded $250,000. We are asking for your help to ensure our 2nd annual give day is even more successful! Our goal is to set a new record by securing more than 700 donors to WWU.

WWU Give Day Challenge Fund
Last year, the matching funds inspired alumni, parents and friends of Western to stretch their gifts, some even making a second and third gift or gifts to establish brand-new named scholarships! Smaller programs that often feel overlooked were able to leverage much needed support because they were able to tell their story and incentivize giving with matching funds.
We have received nearly $100,000 in challenge funds from generous donors to date and will continue to fundraise for Challenge Funds through June 1st. Matching dollars to the general pool will follow the donor’s gift designations and be allocated as a percentage:
Total Matching Pool ÷ Total Give Day Donations = Match %
WWU Give Day Student Challenge
By Dave (’82) and Ann Mann
WWU Alumnus and Foundation Board Member Dave Mann and his wife Ann Thomson Mann have issued a challenge of up to $5,000 to encourage participation by current WWU students. For every gift given by a current student to their favorite department, club, team or scholarship at WWU, Dave and Ann will match that gift with $30! We need 166 students (or 1% of 15,000 students) to meet this challenge!
Students will be encouraged to participate in WWU Give Day in three ways: giving, thanking and sharing their WWU Story to inspire others to support Western.
Leading up to WWU Give Day, we will promote student participation through ambassadors in the Associated Students, Campus Recreation Sport Clubs, Academic units, and Viking Athletics and also via social media, Western Today and direct outreach to students who have connected with WWU Advancement via the Student Alumni Association and events like Paint B’ham Blue for WWU.
WWU Give Day Party in Red Square, June 1 from 10am to 3pm
Dave and Ann Mann have also sponsored a party to celebrate and encourage student participation. The party will feature games, prizes, food, a Viking photo booth and a thanking station where students can write thank you notes, record thank you messages and sign a large banner that will be displayed on Fraser Hall through Commencement, and will be put up again in the fall when we welcome students and families back to campus.
WWU Give Day Recent Grad Challenge
By Dave (’82) and Ann Mann
Gifts made by ’14, ’15, ’16 and ’17 graduates will be doubled through the Recent Grad Challenge Match. Dave and Ann will provide a 1:1 match of the first $5,000 in gifts (up to $1,000 per donor) to encourage recent graduates to participate in WWU Give Day!
Recent graduates will be encouraged to participate through peer ambassadors, and outreach via social media, direct mail and email.
Area Specific Challenge Funds
In addition to fundraising for unrestricted challenge funds, the WWU Foundation Board Give Day Task Force is encouraging donors to also consider issuing challenge funds to inspire giving to their favorite areas on campus. For example, last year Chuckanut Health provided $2,000 in matching funds to inspire gifts to the RN to BSN Scholarship Fund. We are pleased to acknowledge challenge fund gifts on our website and social media.
