After leaving WWU, Gary moved to Seattle where he worked At Bristol Myers Squibb as a research scientist until 1998. His main research focus was receptor tyrosine kinases and ligand biology specifically the EGFR family of receptors/ligands. Other fields of interest included neovascularization, cell cycle control and rheumatoid arthritis. Gary left BMS in 1998 and started his own graphics and design company which lead him to a graphic design position at Immunex/Amgen where he worked until 2004 at which time he left to return to WWU. Most of his spare time is spent with his daughter or great dane or horse but still tries to find time to teach aikido or build guitars or work on cars/motorcycles.
