Sense of smell is one of the first sensations to deplete in early onset of many neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson’s. Defective regulation and degradation of proteins can cause cell death. Caenorhabditis elegans is a well-characterized model organism that enables us to understand more complex mechanisms in the human nervous system. Our regulatory mechanism of interest is ER-associated degradation (ERAD). We plan to characterize the ERAD mechanism regulating odorant receptor Odr-10.
